Betclick is thrilled to reveal that it has entered into an agreement with The Portuguese Women’s Basketball League that will see it provide the same sponsorship pay as the men’s competition during the next three years.

In terms of the partnership protocol signed between the Portuguese Basketball Federation and Betclic Portugal, there will be an investment of €3 million for both competitions over the next three years.

Pureza Sousa, Betclic’s Portugal Country Manager, commented that it is important for them as a brand to contribute to the discussion to break down stereotypes that have long prevented women athletes from having equal pay.

The men’s as well as the women’s tournaments are to be called Liga Betclic and the partners will carry the goal of ‘upping the game on both leagues’ by offering the same conditions for all athletes.

Manuel Fernandes, the President of the Portuguese Basketball Federation, said that they saw the opportunity to be the first to take this step and set an example.

The French betting operator’s initial links to the Portuguese Basketball Federation was made in August 2021 which resulted in its boosted brand visibility and marketing capabilities in the Portuguese sports and sports wagering space.  This saw the Portuguese Basketball League also renamed as the Betclic League.

Data from Nielsen Sports revealed that the sponsorship value and profile of female athletes increased during a “unique window of equality’ provided by the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games which was aided by the ‘level playing field’ for male and female athletes in the competition.
