The European Gaming and Betting Association (EGBA), which counts many Microgaming powered online casinos among its members, has issued a report covering its activities in 2017. The association said that its members handled over one million online payment transactions PER DAY last year.

Some of the highlights of the 2017 EGBA report were as follows:

  • The association’s members possess a total of 134 online gambling licenses.
  • Members offer their gambling and betting services to 19 European Union member states.
  • 12 million Europeans hold an active online account with EGBA member companies – equivalent of 2.4% of Europe’s entire population.
  • An average customer spends EUR 10 each time a sports bet with EGBA companies is made.
  • Online gambling occupies 20.7% of the total EU gambling market. It is expected that this number will grow to 24.9% in 2020.
  • Sports betting is the most popular form of online gambling in Europe at just over 40%, followed by casino games at 32.1%. Lottery, poker and bingo make up 13.3%, 6.1% and 4.6% respectively. Other games make up the last 3.6%.
  • EGBA members contributed EUR 325 million in financial support to European sports federations and sports clubs through sports rights, advertising and sponsorship deals.

“Europe’s online gambling sector is a growing and popular form of digital entertainment – but with this growth comes responsibility to ensure that people are kept safe while playing on online gambling websites,” Maarten Haijer, the Secretary General, EGBA. “This new data shows EGBA members are at the forefront of the sector’s development, interacting with millions of customers and processing nearly a million payment transactions each day.”
