The fourth quarter of 2021 was a lucrative one for Portugal’s online gambling industry, according to the country’s gaming authority Servico Regulacao e Inspecao de Jogos do Turismo de Portugal (SRIJ).

According to the authority, there the industry saw a 24.7% increase year on year in its fourth quarter of the year.

Key points from the Q4 2021 Report:

  • Revenue was up from EUR 113.2 million in Q4 2020 to EUR 141.1 million in the corresponding quarter of 2021.
  • Online casino revenue was recorded at EUR 75.3 million (up 53.3% from EUR 49.1 million in 2020).
  • Sports betting revenue was up 2.6% to EUR 65.8 million.
  • Online casino wagers totaled EUR 2.10 billion in Q4 2021. 
  • Consumer spending on online sports betting increased 26.9% to EUR 377.3 million. 
  • Portuguese players prefer slot games over all other types of cases. Slots accounted for nearly 80% of all wagers in the fourth quarter. French Roulette trailed at 9.4% and blackjack at 5.1%.
  • The most popular form of sports betting involved bets made on football – 77.3%. Basketball made up 11.5% of the total bets and tennis at 6.6%. 
  • Over 210,000 new accounts were opened at online casinos and online sportsbooks in the period. 
  • The SRIJ blocked access to 119 websites which operated in Portugal without a license.
